Chaloner has partnered with Gilead Sciences, Inc. on their search for a Director, Public Affairs – Leadership Communications. Gilead is a research-based biopharmaceutical company that discovers, develops and commercializes innovative medicines in areas of unmet medical need. With each new discovery and investigational drug candidate, they seek to improve the care of patients living with life-threatening diseases around the world. Gilead’s therapeutic areas of focus include HIV/AIDS, liver diseases, cancer and inflammation, and serious respiratory and cardiovascular conditions.

This individual will lead the company’s Leadership Communications program, partnering closely with the Chief Scientific Officer and other leaders to set internal communications strategy. This position will manage a three-person team that is responsible for all functional communications at Gilead and works collaboratively as part of the Employee Communications team.

Essential Duties and Job Functions

  • Oversee functional communications strategy, managing a three-person Leadership Communications team, to help senior leaders across the company advance internal storytelling and encourage employee engagement.
  • Support Chief Scientific Officer and other R&D leaders to create content across a range of internal communications channels.
  • Develop and manage coordinated multi-channel communications plans for CSO and other senior leaders across the company, in partnership with Leadership Communications team.
  • Create communications strategies that consider the needs of various audiences at a company with employees in more than 35 countries around the world.
  • Work with senior leaders and their teams to shape agenda for key functional and corporate presentations, creating slides and other content, and preparing panelists/speakers.
  • Plan global all-hands meetings with employees at sites around the world, partnering with colleagues in IT to include remote audiences.
  • Identify and elevate compelling stories and important organizational developments to company-wide channels.
  • Partner with Public Affairs colleague around the world to support regional communications and share best practices and content.
  • Provide communications counsel to leaders, in partnership with Leadership Communications team and Human Resources colleagues, to support organizational changes.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills

  • Ability to provide counsel on internal communications strategy.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience working with senior leaders and producing high-quality communications materials under tight timelines.
  • Capacity to translate scientific concepts and data into content that is accessible to a broad audience.
  • Proven track record managing and prioritizing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and success working collaboratively within teams and cross-functionally.
  • Demonstrated project and budget management capabilities.
  • Requires 10+ years’ healthcare experience working in-house or in an agency in area of communications.
