Chaloner has partnered with Lucas Public Affairs (LPA), a top California-based public affairs firm, on their search for an Account Supervisor to work out of their Sacramento headquarters.

LPA specializes in developing strategic communications to meet clients’ business and policy objectives by managing high-level reputation, issues management and crisis communications campaigns. The agency works with the state’s leading foundations, nonprofit organizations, associations, businesses and government entities to help them navigate some of the most complex and controversial issues facing California today in areas that include health care, education, civic engagement, energy, transportation, insurance, biotechnology, tourism, business and finance.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Account Supervisor (AS) is a strategic and creative team manager, and has a dual focus: managing the client relationship and taking the lead in junior team supervision. To this end, the AS is responsible for project management, i.e., driving the client services teams toward on-time and on-strategy completion of program deliverables and commitments, and providing supervision and guidance to account team members. The AS also serves as the client team’s daily go-to person on operational direction, tactical challenges, priority alignment and client relations support.

The AS is a strategic thinker with well-honed skills in the full range of strategic communications, including policy, public affairs, government relations, writing and content development, media relations, issues and crisis management, coalition building, reputation management, and social and digital media. The AS deploys strategies and tactics with a strong focus on developing and executing compelling client programming.

The ideal candidate is both creative/strategic as well as “hands-on” – and must have strong writing skills, demonstrated experience in strategic thinking and be highly organized and able to work in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment. Familiarity with California political and regulatory issues and the news media is highly desired.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A minimum of six years of experience in public affairs, government affairs, journalism, lobbying, or related work; with a BA/BS.
  • Agency experience highly preferred; experience in a public affairs/public policy agency preferred.
  • Industry knowledge and experience required, including a broad knowledge of concepts related to multiple industries, including health care, foundations/nonprofits, education, civic engagement, energy, transportation, insurance, biotechnology, tourism, business and finance.
  • Must exhibit a demonstrated track record of developing and executing successful strategic communications programs.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills (e.g., verbal, written and over the phone).
  • Superior organizational skills and attention to detail.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Public Affairs & Strategic Communications

  • Exhibit strong understanding of the public affairs and strategic communications strategies and tools.
  • Adept project management capabilities; able to own and execute projects with independent accountability.
  • Develop, oversee, and manage complex strategic communications and public affairs work.
  • Measure and report performance on builds and campaigns; regularly monitor and create ROI and performance reports.
  • Monitor public affairs and media channels on a daily basis for latest trends and case studies.
  • Must be a sharp, persuasive writer with the ability to write both strategically and creatively under tight deadlines.
  • Savvy media relations strategist with understanding of all aspects of media and experience preparing strategic media plans, pitching and media monitoring.
  • Demonstrated expertise with social media and digital strategy and tactics.
  • Must be able to write content/documents including proposals, strategic plans, client memos/correspondence, press releases, fact sheets, news advisories, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement public affairs strategy plans.

Client Service & Client Relationship Management

  • Excellent consulting and oral communications skills with demonstrated ability to gain trust of client, understand client’s underlying needs and goals, persuade or influence decisions, and be viewed as a valued partner.
  • Enthusiastic ability to provide clients with the highest level of client service.
  • Pitch and sell ideas and concepts to others.
  • Help to organically grow and maintain client relationships as part of an integrated team by delivering top quality work, working collaboratively with others and constantly watching for new opportunities.
  • Provide day-to-day strategic communications counsel to clients, helping to achieve their business goals.

Team Management | Team Work

  • Delegate and monitor work of junior team members; regularly coach and give feedback.
  • Collaborate with senior staff to deliver strategic and creative programs for clients.
  • Team building experience and leadership ability to develop a high performing, committed team and contribute to a positive work environment.
  • A proven ability to interact with and provide direction to external stakeholders, including strong, high-profile personalities, and work with the news media, legislators, consultants and/or lobbyists.

Project Management & Budget Management

  • Project management skills, to ensure quality standards are met, strong results are achieved and all deliverables are created on-time and on-budget.
  • Experience in helping to develop and track budgets – from scope of work to annualized budgets.
