Chaloner has partnered with Wellspring Philanthropic Fund on their search for a Communications Director to be based out of their New York, NY headquarters.

Job Summary

Wellspring Philanthropic Fund seeks a Communications Director who will provide critical support for the President and other members of Wellspring Philanthropic Fund (WPF) in the areas of communications and external affairs. While WPF prefers to keep a low profile, there is a need for someone to work with Executive Leadership to shape the philanthropy’s narrative, create a cogent communications approach for the organization and manage the occasional outside communications related to public relations. The ideal candidate will have a combination of excellent communications, narrative building and public relations instincts, while also being a creative thinker. The candidate will also have an ability to shift priorities quickly as needed, and able to lead work independently.

Key responsibilities

  • Work with Executive Leadership to create a compelling narrative for WPF, and a plan for its use to support appropriate understanding of WPF’s role and work with different audiences.
  • Manage special projects including but not limited to creating a historical narrative about key points in WPF’s existence and how they align with significant world events, shifts in policy or other notable occurrences.
  • Plan and prepare talking points and presentation materials as needed for the President and other senior leaders as part of their participation at important events.
  • As needed in collaboration with an outside public relations firm, draft press materials, and serve as on-the-record spokesperson.
  • Advise donors, President and WPF program leaders on any thought leadership opportunities.
  • Monitor compliance of communications policies and monitor the internet and social media channels for positive and negative stories about WPF.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Learning & Evaluation Officer in disseminating analyses of WPF’s strategies, grantmaking, and learning activities.
  • Coordinate the creation of any additional content for the website.
  • Other duties as needed.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements/Qualifications

The successful candidate will have the following:

  • BS or BA in Communications, Journalism, or Public Relations – or equivalent experience required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience working in a communications and/or external affairs function in a social justice organization or philanthropy.
  • A demonstrated interest in human rights/social justice. Understands and values social justice, including racial and gender equity as an organizational operating principle - - and is committed to continued learning on issues related to race, gender, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Superior written and oral communication skills; ability to produce original, clear, concise content within tight deadlines; meticulous proofreader and copyeditor.
  • Self-motivation, with an ability to work proactively, independently, and with a strong sense of urgency.
  • Experience interacting and communicating effectively with members of a complex organization at multiple levels.
  • Ability to shift gears comfortably, flex skills, and multi-task effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication abilities.
  • Strong project management skills, deadline management, sense of responsibility and accountability and the ability to effectively multi-task.
  • Strong moral compass; personal ethics and integrity must be impeccable.
  • Collaborative focus, recognizing the value in fostering an environment which promotes shared communications, efforts and results.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint); Mailchimp and InDesign skills a plus.
