Chaloner has partnered with Climate Nexus (CN), a nonprofit strategic communications group dedicated to changing the conversation on climate change and clean energy solutions in the United States, on their search for a Director of National Media Strategy for its Campaigns & Strategies team in Washington, D.C.


  • Lead media strategy and communications for Climate Nexus’ Campaigns & Strategies team. Includes management of communications staff.
  • Assist in creating and executing systems to identify and respond to emerging threats and opportunities.
  • Create communications and messaging strategies to preemptively address emerging issues and strengthen the competitive position of environmental and clean energy stakeholders.
  • Work with senior communications and campaign leaders from partner organizations to develop, coordinate, and execute communications strategies.
  • Translate research and data into compelling communications products to influence public opinion, policy debates, and media coverage.
  • Engage and build relationships with journalists who cover beats related to climate change and clean energy. Also expand and influence coverage by non-climate/energy beat reporters.
  • Perform duties as assigned by the Managing Director of the Campaigns & Strategies team.


  • Creative, imaginative and strategic thinker. Entrepreneur in communications approaches across media platforms (print, broadcast, web, social).
  • Persuasive communicator with outstanding interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills. Able to guide others to create and deliver effective content.
  • Well-connected with journalists who cover issues related to climate and clean energy. Is knowledgeable about news gathering techniques and story development, placement, and presentation.
  • Demonstrates strong pro-active leadership. Delegates appropriately while remaining flexible and willing to pitch in to achieve goals and meet deadlines. Has an inclusive management style and provides growth opportunities for staff.
  • Exhibits political savvy and maturity. Strong stakeholder and coalition management skills with ability to work effectively within complex environments.
  • Has at least 10 years of experience in communications, public relations and/or media relations, journalism, politics, or campaigns.
  • Understands the climate and clean energy landscape, including policy issues, political context, industry/market developments, and cultural environment.
  • Preference for senior professionals with prior experience in issues, brand, and/or crisis management.
  • Undergraduate degree required.
