Chaloner has partnered with The TJX Companies in their search for a Director/Manager of Media Relations.

Job Summary

  • This Director-level position, official title Manager of Media Relations, will support the AVP of Corporate Communications as part of a highly visible global communications team that works directly with the highest levels of management.
  • Will be one of several corporate spokespersons to business and general media.
  • In this highly visible position, this role will interact with senior management throughout the Company including CFO, General Counsel, divisional management, and Human Resources executives.
  • Requires excellent written and verbal communications skills as position deals with a wide range of topics and issues.
  • This is a hands-on position which requires the ability to manage multiple projects involving many different functional areas of the Company. Must excel at executing programs and also have the ability to see the big picture and comprehend complex business issues.
  • Primary member of the crisis-ready communications team, which requires 24/7 availability in a crisis.
  • Reports to AVP, Corporate Communications.

Responsibilities

  • Manage issues/crisis communications that could impact the Company’s perception and reputation among major constituencies, including Wall Street, customers, Associates, and media. Position serves as a resource to divisions and their marketing PR groups, with a goal of coordinating Company business messaging and minimizing negative media impact from reputation-threatening situations. Will craft and vet messaging in response to issues/corporate communications situations, working with various subject matter experts. Issues may emanate from customers and store situations, crime, natural disaster, product safety, labeling, etc.
  • Act as one of the Company’s spokespersons with general news and financial media as needed. Assist in handling reactive media issues with press, including responding to media calls, drafting media statements, and correcting inaccuracies in news stories.
  • Provide continued support for the TJX Global Issues Escalation Process and Communications Policy. This position will develop and/or review a high volume of materials to better manage the Company’s messaging and reputation.

Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate will have 10+ years of corporate communications and/or public relations experience and preferably have held mid-management to more senior roles at consumer/retail companies, other large companies, or an international communications agency.
  • Master’s Degree in communications preferable.
  • Excellent communications skills, both written and verbal, are a must. Ability to communicate complex business information in a clear and compelling way.
  • Strong knowledge of issues/crisis management and media experience is required, as is experience coordinating communications efforts across a large, organization.
  • Extremely strong attention to detail and execution, and very process-oriented, while keeping strategic issues in mind.
  • Hands-on approach, flexible, adaptable, and willing to do whatever it takes to deliver results in tight time frames and under pressure.
  • Ability to build effective working relationships, internally and externally, at all levels.
  • Ability and adaptability to be “crisis ready,” including flexibility to work evenings, weekends and holidays, as needed, and during department’s busy periods, both scheduled and unanticipated.
  • Experience or interest in a fashion/retail/consumer industry.
