About Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts

Founded in 1937, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA) has been a nationally recognized health care leader for more than 80 years. BCBSMA was the first organization of its kind to offer statewide insurance coverage for hospital stays and doctor visits, and over the years while much has changed, BCBSMA has remained firm on their single-minded commitment to do what is best for their members. BCBSMA’s customers include half of the Fortune 500 companies headquartered in Massachusetts and they are consistently rated among the nation’s best health plans for quality and member satisfaction.

Located in Boston, BCBSMA is a community-focused, tax-paying, not-for-profit health plan, serving 2 million Massachusetts members and 800,000 out-of-state members. With 3,600 employees, BCBSMA manages $13 billion in annual healthcare spend and maintains 41% market share in Massachusetts. BCBSMA offers HMO, PPO, Senior/Medicare Products, Dental, Long and Short-Term Disability, Term and Dependent Life, Accident, Critical Illness, and International Health Coverage.

BCBSMA is committed to paying doctors and hospitals for the value instead of volume of care, and in a study published by the New England Journal of Medicine, their Alternative Quality Contract (AQC) has led to a 10+% savings on medical spend while simultaneously improving the quality of patient care.

As the healthcare paradigm continues to shift, offering more transparency, connectivity, and inviting patients to become engaged consumers, health plans too are evolving. BCBSMA has always put member satisfaction first, but in this new era, BCBSMA is making the shift from member satisfaction to consumer engagement. With higher deductibles serving as a call to action for consumers, BCBSMA wants to be the differentiated brand of choice in the market across all product lines for employers and for consumers.
