Position Overview

Reporting to the CEO, and serving on the senior leadership team, the Vice President (VP) of Strategic Communications will be responsible for the development and implementation of MLT’s integrated communication strategy. S/he will develop and execute an integrated communications plan for MLT focused on promoting and advancing MLT’s mission and engaging key stakeholders, including current and prospective partners with an emphasis on the tech sector, Fellows and alumni, philanthropists/ donors, thought-leaders, media, and the general public.

S/he will be responsive to internal stakeholders/ colleagues while providing focus and consistency across the organization for defining and elevating MLT’s profile and raising broader awareness and engagement among target audiences. S/he will oversee the relationship with external strategic communications/ PR firms and orchestrate a broad range of public relations/media activities/content generation to drive MLT’s brand awareness, positioning and priorities. S/he will oversee a team of 3 or more, managing MLT’s owned and earned communications channels including: Web site, blog, E-news, social media and other online communications; media and public relations; and marketing of MLT’s programs and initiatives.

The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated track record of building and engaging multiple audiences, exercising thought-leadership and creating organizational impact across media platforms and forums/ conferences. Experience and relationships with media contacts, especially those covering the tech sector, are highly desirable. The ideal candidate should be familiar with issues related to diversity and inclusion and be able to serve as a credible spokesperson for an organization committed to social equity for underrepresented minorities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Elevate MLT’s profile and that of its founder/CEO, with focus on accelerating MLT’s impact in the tech sector to leverage and raise the organization’s visibility among target audiences, including prospective fellows, partners, and philanthropists
  • Link MLT’s experience and expertise to national priorities and dialogue
  • Demonstrate how MLT’s mission for developing the careers and leadership of diverse men and women can help bridge socio/racial divides.
  • Leverage MLT’s partners, programs, and events to generate awareness, affiliation, and support with emphasis on current and prospective partners and philanthropists
  • Create and implement robust marketing communications/public relations strategy, focused on cultivation and engagement of external audiences, including the media and key influencers
  • Develop and implement campaigns for MLT’s centralized mission, programs and projects
  • Oversee development and distribution of marketing communications assets: website, social media, external stakeholders (agencies and vendors); digital collateral, e-newsletters, blog, potential annual report and presentations
  • Vet/prioritize media opportunities, craft talking points, and serve as a lead spokesperson and point person on media interactions
  • Develop and supervise 3 or more team members; promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality

Qualifications

  • At least 10 years of experience building and leading a comprehensive communications function; experience in a start-up is a plus
  • Experience growing a niche brand to a more well-known national brand through direct oversight of a marketing team or through working with them as a close thought partner
  • Demonstrated ability to build a high-performing communications teams in a lean, dynamic organization
  • Demonstrated ability to proactively build and sustain media relationships, shape opportunities and position content with top tier media to achieve high-impact placements; an established network within broadcast media is a plus
  • Proven experience gaining earned media
  • Consummate story-telling ability, with proven experience in executive writing. Must be adept at guiding visual storytelling, including video, photography and social media channels
  • Demonstrated experience identifying, training and promoting thought leaders and leadership across multiple audiences
  • Passion for MLT’s mission
